Let's go over how Luminous keeps track of landed cost. Look, I've been in your shoes before. It's very difficult to find an inventory system that can actually keep track of landed cost. Here are the specific things we built into Luminous so that you, an e-commerce company, can actually keep track of landed cost.
1. Very flexible purchasing flows
We understand that for most e-commerce companies, you're kind of flying by the seat of your pants when it comes to purchasing. That's okay, we allow that. We make it dead simple to write and maintain your purchase orders, and you can edit any of the fields as long as the PO is still open.
2. True cost layers
Luminous thinks of a cost layer as any transaction where a variable cost can be added to one of the layers. The most common example is splitting off a PO, or multiple POs, into a shipment, then adding variable costs to that shipment and allocating those costs to the layer.
A really common variable cost you'll run into is when your freight forwarder sends you a bill for freight and duties. You can also add things like labor, or any other miscellaneous line item, into a layer.
3. Flexible allocation
- By quantity: Luminous can take a variable cost and distribute it evenly across the quantity on the cost layer.
- By volume: Luminous keeps track of all of your products' weights and dimensions, so we can also distribute the cost evenly across the volume of the products. That means you could purchase cards and a big piece of furniture, and Luminous will allocate the variable cost correctly to each of them.
- By subtotal: If you don't want to allocate costs like that, you can simply add them to the layer as a subtotal.
4. Easy visualization of cost layers
Luminous lets you see, at either the warehouse level or the product level, all of the active layers of landed cost in your warehouse or warehouses. It's easy to export, easy to find where there are issues, and easy for your accountant to come in and get the information they need.
